Mari0: Special Edition adds online, boss battle and more

A while back, indie studio Stabyourself released one of the greatest video game mashups ever to be released for free, Mari0. Recently they announced that fans would be receiving a Special Edition of the Super Mario/ Portal crossover, bringing more hats, a new final boss, an updated campaign and online multiplayer… and more hats.

The online component has been something the developers have teased us with in the past, showing complete portal jump and run madness with 6 players running the course simultaneously.

Claiming that it was something the creator, Maurice Guégan, was “unhappy” with, the Mari0 Portal campaign is getting reworked too, updating maps and, more importantly, adding a boss fight designed by the community. “Since the community has been very imaginative in mappack creation, giving everyone a chance to design the ultimate boss battle should end up with some pretty amazing ideas,” Stabyourself posted.

Alongside the announcement, Guégan posted a set of guidelines and a design template:

  • Design a boss fight for the end of the Mari0 campaign
  • It can be Glados, or Bowser, or Glowser, or anyone, I don’t care
  • Use visual media to show your idea – a scribble is better than 5 pages of text
  • Will have to work in Single and in Multiplayer

Submissions for the boss battle can be posted on the Stabyourself.net forum here.

Personally, I’m excited to hear about this update. wWhat I’m looking forward to the most, is the fact that Mari0 will soon be graced with an insane online mode… AND HATS! So head on over to their website and download it for free, there’s no reason not to, it’s available for all major computer operating systems.
