Yesterday saw the announcement of Borderlands 2, a game which from the trailer looks set to be a stunning sequel to Gearbox software’s 2009 FPS/RPG hybrid, Borderlands.
Gigantic alien enemies, masses of guns and dancing robots should all be familiar to fans of the first game, and the trailer promises these in bucket loads. The strength of Borderlands was always the diversity in its weapons and enemies, and Borderlands 2 would appear to keep with the trusted formula while stepping it up a gear.
Co-operative four player gameplay and two player split screen has carried over from the first game, ensuring you can have a great singleplayer campaign that friends can drop into at any time. This feature was present in the first game, but a stumbling block came from the fact that player 2 had to either pick an existing character or create a new one. If your vault hunter wasn’t near the level of the first player, you had better get used to being revived.
Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K, had this to say:
“The addictive gameplay and shooting and looting mayhem of the first Borderlands is back and better than ever in Borderlands 2, taking the franchise to an entirely new level. With more guns, more enemies, more missions, an engaging story and all-new characters, Borderlands 2 promises to bring a new era to gaming this fall.”
While it remains to be seen whether Borderlands 2 will usher in a new era of gaming, you can bet that it will be a whole lot of fun. Borderlands 2 is in stores in North America on September 18, 2012 and internationally on September 21, 2012 on PC, PS3 and XBOX 360.
