Most film tie-ins are absolute drivel. 99% seem to be made for a quick buck where publishers will prey on fans of the film with little knowledge of the games industry. Look at the game conversions for franchises such as the Pirates of the Caribbean. The films have been tarnished by some rubbish game being rushed out in time for the movie’s big release. It’s a shame really because some of these games could have been something special if someone had given them time, money and a little care.
The thing that really does my head in is when game developers decide to create a game for a random kids films like Rio, while they ignore the latest action blockbuster. I know that Rio probably has better marketing material and an audience more susceptible to crap, but come on at least pick a film that should theoretically work as a game!
With that said here are the top five films that we think should be made into games. If you don’t agree or think we missed something out then tell us in the comments box below.
Film: Bourne Trilogy
Desired Developer: Rocksteady
OK now I know there have been Bourne games made but nobody has made a serious pop at them. They’ve all been cash-ins that you can find in your local Asda bargain bin for 99p. What we really need is a proper Bourne game. This doesn’t need to only be based on the film trilogy either. Robert Ludlum’s books have a lot more going on than in the films.
The game could easily be split into four different sections: driving, fighting, stealth and chasing. Imagine it, the scene from The Bourne Identity with Clive Owens character, The Professor, could be like the battle with The End in MGS 3. The fight/chase scene in Morocco would have a blend of Arkham City’s fighting system and Assassin’s Creed’s free-running. Finally the driving scenes would be pulled straight out of the old Driver games which always reminded me of the Bourne films. There’s so much potential here.
Film: Shoot ‘Em Up
Desired Developer: People Can Fly
Shoot ‘Em Up may not have been the best film in the world but it was a fun and easy on the eye. You can stick it on in the background and have a laugh as you drop in and out of it while you’re busy doing whatever else you want. The thing that Shoot ‘Em Up does well is that it completely understands what it is. It is aware that it’s an over the top, cheap thrills film and it’s fine with it.
Now days games get too bogged down in having a solid story. Every developer seems to always stress how their story leads their characters down and emotional path, bla bla bla. For once I want to see a developer come out and say: “Yeah the story’s not important, all that matters is that Mr X has to go off and kill Mr Z and all of his goons.”
That’s exactly what it felt like watching Shoot ‘Em Up. Someone has sat there and thought of good action film ideas and tacked on a story later. If you think I’m being a bit odd here just disregarding story take a look at all the Arnie films. Most of them are identical just with different environments. I’d like to see the people behind mad games Painkiller and Bulletstorm head up this one with one thought on their mind: insane action!
Film: City of God
Desired Developer: Rockstar North
This South American film about the ghettos of Brazil is amazing. If you haven’t seen it yet then go buy it right now. I mean it! The film tells the stories of various occupants of a Brazilian favela and their involvement in gang life.
Now imagine GTA in Brazil. It would make a change from the usual gang warfare of America that we always get from developers. Set these games somewhere different and give us a serious story. They could even give the game RPG elements where you’d take control of particular areas of the favela as you go along. Rockstar are the masters of open world crime games and I reckon they’d work well on this one. They’ll already have a good bunch of the assets ready with Max Payne 3′s setting. They could even integrate the drug dealing system from Chinatown Wars into this game.
The Good the Bad and the Weird:
Desired Developer: Capcom
A brilliant Korean film here and one that would work really well as a game too. Three characters all are searching for one map that shows where a hidden treasure lies. Of course each one of these people is deadly with their weapons of choice and has their own distinct personality. The film has a western setting and is an odd blend of action and comedy well worth watching.
As a game the three different characters would work really well. You could split the game by the different personalities and see how each one gets involved in the story. There would be some brilliant set pieces too, like the final chase where the army gets involved or the opening train heist. I picked Capcom for this one as I envision the game to be a third person, over the shoulder affair. Something which Capcom knows a thing or two about with the Resident Evil and Lost Planet series.
Film: Warrior King
Desired Developer: Platinum Games
This film is pure action mixed in with some scenes about elephants and some Thai people attempting to speak English and struggling. The most important thing from that list is action, because this film is rammed full of the stuff. Lead actor Tony Jaa is known for his martial arts and acrobatic skills. Both Ong Bak and this film were made without the use of CGI or wirework and when the man is leaping over SUVs you know he has some skills.
The game would be a mix of action and free running with some RPG elements as you unlock new moves and techniques. Platinum Games have proven that they can deal with intense 3rd person action games with games like Bayonetta, Anarchy Reigns and Metal Gear Solid Rising all on their CV. Hell if you don’t believe that this would work check out a clip from the film below, it looks like it was cut from a video game!
How about a Battle Royale/Hunger Games style video game. A kind of multiplayer dropped into a map with a large selection of randomly placed weapons, traps and opponents fight for survival thing.
