have confirmed that a new Gears of War game will be coming to the Xbox 360. The latest cover for their magazine was posted earlier than expected, presumably to build expectations for the game’s full unveiling at E3.

The image shows two COG soldiers standing with a prisoner wearing a COG outfit, while in the background we can see reapers tearing apart what looks like Earth. We think that this is a prequel, after all the Gears of War series started off with Marcus Fenix being released from jail to fight the locust. The prisoner in the image does not seem to have the husky figure that Marcus has, in fact we would say this looks a little more like Dom.

All speculations aside, the conclusive ending of Gears of War 3 diminishes the idea of this new title being a sequel. Cliff Bleszinski even said to VG247:

“When you finish the game [Gears of War 3] and the credits roll there’s no magic thing after the credits saying, ‘Now there’s a new threat coming.’ It’s a gag that’s played out right now in the business, and if we were to do something else in the future, I hope we’d find a fresh take on it. Fresh, not only for us as developers, but also for the consumers.”

Things get a bit more mysterious too. states that this is only one of two covers for the July magazine and that fans should, “check back on Monday when we fully pull back the curtain on both (yes, we said “both”) of our covers.”

They have also promised readers that they will release the first teaser trailer for the game on Monday.
