When thinking back to the steam-punk Batman game that could’ve been I can’t help but to be disappointed. New footage Day 1 Studios’ Gotham by Gaslight doesn’t make things better.
Siliconera was able to snag a prototype video of the title we won’t be seeing, explaining further why the project was canceled, “Gotham by Gaslight was developed as a pitch for PS3 and Xbox 360 between 2009 and 2010. (…) Day 1 Studios tried to work with THQ to publish the game, but after an unsuccessful pitch Gotham by Gaslight was canned.”
From what little we can see in the short video the design seems to be quite intriguing while in my own opinion, the way the cape behaves is the most impressive. A discussion on Reddit unveiled the developer behind the cloth technology, Joe can den Heuvel, dubbed “Shroud”. Heuvel has since started his own company, , and will be implementing his textile engine in upcoming titles such as Hitman: Absolution.
Gotham by Gaslight, which was supposed to be based on a comic series with the same name published in 1989, had Bruce Wayne facing off against Jack the Ripper in a late 1800s Gotham City. Maybe this is one to put up on kickstarter.
