Konami has appeased fans with the release of the opening animation from the highly anticipated HD remake of the Zone of the Enders series.
The series comes from video game mastermind Hideo Kojima of the Metal Gear franchise, and follows the brewing conflict surrounding a mysterious energy source, Metatron. Central to this conflict are two orbital frames, Jehuty and Anubis – giant mechs with incredible power to reshape the battle for good.
Fans of the series will instantly recognise the trailer’s musical accompaniment, which featured prominently in the opening cutscenes for the second of the two games. The gorgeous anime style which premièred in the second instalment returns with added polish, and has now spread across to the first as well, giving the series a vibrant, consistent aesthetic.
Accompanying the reveal of the opening animation, Konami have released a gameplay video featuring an interview with Hideo Kojima.
A massive fan favourite, the ZOE community has been starved of a sequel for nearly a decade, with the last title in the series, Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner, hitting shelves back in early 2003.
Despite the wait, the fanbase has had fresh vitality injected into it with the forthcoming Zone of the Enders HD Collection, bringing the two main games to PS3, PS Vita and for the first time, the Xbox 360.
If that news wasn’t enough to delight the frantic fans, Kojima officially confirmed on 25 May 2012 that the next game in the Zone of the Enders series was in the works.
