Microsoft have revived fan’s hopes of a Killer Instinct sequel by renewing its trademark.
RARE hold the license to the franchise, but with the originals out on the SNES and N64, it is very unlikely that they will be released onto consoles. Since RARE moved over to Microsoft, fans of Killer Instinct have called for a next-gen sequel. Microsoft have kept RARE on a tight leash though, only allowing them to make family games such as Kinect Sports.
What makes this trademark even more suspicious is the fact that Microsoft bragged about it on their Xbox Live Arcade blog saying:
“With all due respect to our friends in the media who like to frequent trademark sites, we thought we’d break this one ourselves.
“Our legal eagles have authorized us to say: We have either renewed or refiled a trademark application in various jurisdictions.”
It’s been 16 years since Killer Instinct Gold was released on consoles and we are beginning to forget that feeling of satisfaction after pulling off an ultra combo.
