Motorola has been making headway in a fight to stop sales of specific Microsoft products, forbidding the distribution of Xbox360s, Windows 7 software, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player in Germany and possibly soon in the USA.
The ban comes from a a recent case in court which ruled that Microsoft had infringed two patents necessary to offer H.264 coding and playback. For now the US court is looking into the matter to determine if Motorola is able to enforce further prohibitions, as the licence filed for the video code was supposedly not done under “fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory” terms.
According to the BBC the hearing is scheduled for May 7, although the ruling may be issued at a later date. The German case is supposedly also likely to be taken to the European Commission.
The fact of the matter is that taking such measures over the use of a video coding seems quite harsh, maybe there is more for Motorola to gain out of this, than simple settlement.
