Yesterday Electronic Arts released an Indie Bundle via Steam, today Markus ‘Notch’ Persson commented on the matter claiming that “EA is methodically destroying” indie gaming.
“EA releases an ‘indie bundle’? That’s not how that works, EA,” Notch tweeted. “Stop attempting to ruin everything, you bunch of cynical bastards.”
Notch went on to explain that at this point he doesn’t even consider Mojang to be “indie” and that when criticising EA, he is criticising their work as a company and not the games they publish. Undoubtedly Persson isn’t the only one who thinks that, recent PR catastrophes and marketing ploys have left the once popular video game monolith in a bad light. However the irony in this situation that EA’s Indie Bundle was released via Steam is priceless.
With countless independent developers coming forth, kickstarter campaigns shooting out of the ground and simply the technology becoming more accessible, the future for low budget releases seems bright. We welcome to see that even after being so successful that Mojang’s founder still supports the little man and speaks what he thinks.
