Activision Blizzard recently released their latest financial report in which the company was able to show off some remarkable profits for the first quarter of 2012. However, one of the pioneers in video game branding, Skylanders, has some of the most impressive figures to speak for itself.
“In North America and Europe, including accessory packs and figures, Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure was the #3 best-selling game overall in dollars across all platforms for the first quarter of 2012 and the #1 selling kids’ title in dollars in the quarter,” the official report reads. “On April 5, 2012, Activision Publishing expanded the reach of the Skylanders franchise with the debut of Skylanders Cloud Patrol™, an entirely new gaming experience for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users.”
What comes as the biggest surprise however is that being the “#1 selling kids’ title” means more than just knocking out digital competitors, as internal estimates coming from Activision Blizzard leave us to believe “that Skylander’s toys sales in the first quarter exceeded those of Star Wars, the #1 action figure line.”
In my opinion, this is video game branding at its finest. Although I’m not a fan of the Skylanders franchise, seeing how a game has managed to dominate across multiple markets is highly impressive, albeit a tidbit concerning.
