BAFTA interview – Craig Fairbrass (Modern Warfare 1-3)

Stargate SG-1

Craig Fairbrass played Gaz in the original Modern Warfare and Ghost, Roach in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Audiences fell in love with his cockney accent and he was hired again as Sgt. Walcroft in Modern Warfare 3. Although he wasn’t up for a gong tonight, Fairbrass was presenting the award for Design in games.

You may know Fairbrass from Rise of the Footsoldier, The Bank Job, or as Dan from Eastenders. He was kind enough to stop and take a few questions us and other members of the media.

(M= Media, CF= Craig Fairbrass)

M: How is it working on Call of Duty?

CF: Yeah, with three different characters. No it’s a lot of fun, funnily enough. What can you do, you know. You do what you gotta do in the game and I love every second of it. Luckily for me they keep bringing me back. My boring cockney accent again.

M: Do you play yourself?

CF: I don’t my two sons are obsessed with it. I find them quite difficult. I just enjoy working on them.

M: Being a Brit and not a bad guy is nice as well.

CF: Yeah. The games just keep getting bigger and better. I’m just pleased to be a part of it so far. What can I say?

M: You doing anything outside of games at the moment?

CF: I got a big film coming out in the Summer called St. George’s Day, gangster movie, Ashley Walters is in it, me, Charles Dance,  Frank Harp, Vince Regan, Neil Maskell. Really, really good. Big release in August. I’ve just been out in Malaysia filming a Viking movie, believe it or not and I’m going back to do another one.

M: Do you get recognised for your voice ever?

CF: Do I get recognised for my voice? Yeah, a couple of times. A guy came up to me in a coffee shop in Malaysia and said, “you seem really familiar”. I get a lot of emails from younger people wanting me to record things for them on phones, “let’s do this” and things like that.

M: Are you recognised more for that than other roles?

CF: No Rise of the Footsoldier changed everything for me. I don’t know if you seen it, it’s a British gangster film, but after that it all went you know. I love this though, this is cool. I’m finally involved in something that’s a bit cool.

M: Are you being typecast in films?

CF: Yes, finally! You know there’s one thing worse than being type-cast is not-cast. You know what I mean? I’m more than happy to do what I do, and try to do it the best I can and they keep employing me.

M: Best of luck to you. Have a good night.
