Visceral’s Vice President, Steve Papoutsis has stated that players will be able to “torture” humans in Dead Space 3.
Speaking to PSM3 Papoutsis discussed the different ways of taking out necromorphs. This led onto the issue of humans are dealt with in Dead Space 3. The game now has Unitologist enemies you encounter. These are people that have been brainwashed by the marker and their cult. Commenting on this issue Papoutsis said:
“You don’t just have to shoot off their limbs, but if that’s the kind of thing you’re into, you can certainly take off their limbs and torture them. You can even stomp on them.
“I think that really comes down to an individual’s play-style, and most importantly, if they find that to be fun.”
I would be lying if I said that I did not have fun stomping on the bodies of necromorphs. There is something satisfying about stamping the alien creatures to death. That said, there is something rather sadistic about the idea of doing it to humans and about the way Papoutsis has advertised this.
The fact that the bodies may use the same physics makes sense, so making it so that human bodies cannot be maimed would be a little odd. What I do not make sense of is Papoutsis promotion of the fact that you can sit there and “torture” enemies.
This only emphasises our view that the Dead Space series has lost its way, focusing on the mass market and concentrating on action and gore rather than horror and scares. Let us hope we are wrong.
