In 2002, Square Enix released Kingdom Hearts. The game was an RPG collaboration with Disney Interactive Studios that followed main character Sora as he tries desperately to find his friends. Throughout his journey he befriends Disney characters Goofy and Donald Duck and they travel together through different Disney-themed worlds to find Kairi and Riku. If you don’t know the game this may seem very child-orientated but the first and second Kingdom Heart games are quite striking and well-made.
Today, Square Enix has made the announcement official: their 10th anniversary next year will be celebrated by a release of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.
The game will be available on the Nintendo 3DS, and will open the ending of the Kingdom Hearts series as well as “a first look into the future form of the Kingdom Hearts series,” says director Tetsuya Nomura.
Despite Dream Drop Distance marking the tenth anniversary of a great game, I am dubious of the success it will see. Being only on one platform and also being similar to other instalments that didn’t see much success either, i.e. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories; Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
But we will all be happy to wish this series a happy tenth anniversary in 2012.
