While the gaming industry still relies on records of purchased games, it is still important to recognise the vast number of people who illegally download their video games (for whatever reason.)

Dutch blog Torrent Freak reported the top pirated games of the past year and the results were relatively surprising.

For PC the most pirated game of 2011 was EA sci-fi shooter Crysis 2 with 3 920 000 downloads from its release in March. Despite its later release date, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had 3 650 000 illegal downloads and Battlefield 3 was downloaded 3 510 000 times for PC.
According to Torrent Freak, the Xbox 360’s most torrented game was Gears of War 3 with 890 000 pirated copies downloaded, which was followed again by Modern Warfare 3 with 830 000.

The Wii also saw a considerable amount of pirate downloads as Mario Sports Mix was downloaded 1 090 000 times.
Curiously, the blog did not release statistics for the Playstation 3 as the numbers were too low.
