Square Enix have commented on their impressive tech demo for their Luminous Engine claiming that “just one Blu-ray may not be sufficient,” for the amount of data it would require to run a game on it.
The Luminous Engine demo, which you can watch below, is extremely impressive. So much so that several critics questioned how exactly this would work. Yoshihisa Hashimoto, Chief Technical Officer at Square Enix and Producer/Director of the demo told RPGsite that the impressive video uses CG assets and that comparing the types of tech was core to its development:
“Square Enix Visual Works put together an unreleased CG version of the movie for us to work to. Our goal was to achieve the same quality between CG and the real-time.
“[We're then shown the CG and real-time demos running side-by-side. The two are impressively close.]“
The amount of data required for this type of game would be humongous, when questioned about this issue Hashimoto replied, “Yeah, that could be a challenge. There’s a possibility that just one Blu-ray may not be sufficient.”
The extra power has not taken anything away from Luminous’ speed as Hashimoto commented:
“Of course enabling 60 frames per second – that is somewhere we’d like to aim, definitely. The sort of high-speed processing required for that is definitely inevitable eventually. To make games at this quality level it’s also the minimum.”
That said, we have heard things like this before. Anyone remember ?
