Receiver must be one of the most ambitious games that we have seen. The FPS was designed as part of a 7-Day challenge where the Wolfire team only had a week to come up with a new FPS.
While the graphics in the game are not the best we are pleasantly surprised by some of the game design choices. The first huge one is that if you die in Receiver there is no respawning. There are no save points. You are dead. This means that you value your virtual life a lot more, making a more tense and realistic game.
When you play you will not be asked to play the same levels again though. Instead the levels are randomised, while the story is told through different cassette tapes that are found in Receiver.
The game does not stop there when messing with the FPS genre. In Receiver there is no HUD. Instead you can view each magazine and the chamber of your gun to check whether you are running low on ammo or not. Shooting is context sensitive too with individual parts of robots being damaged by firing in certain areas. This means that you could damage a turrets sensors, but they can still move, or vice-versa.
Those of you that have pre-ordered Overgrowth can pick up Receiver for free, otherwise you can download it now for the price of $5.
