A “one-man team” indie developer is stepping to the plate to create a game inspired by titles such as Freelancer, The Elder Scrolls, Deus Ex and System Shock that just might be a contender for Notch’s upcoming 0x10c.
Besides certain similarities to the work at Mojang, such as the plan create a randomly generated worlds, open-ended space gameplay and on-board computers which can be used to hack opponent ships, Rodina will be using a model to finance development, reminiscent of what Minecraft did before its actual launch. The title created by Elliptic Games will be made available to the public at “a modest scope and for a modest price” so that sales can support further production.
“There has yet to be a video game which delivers the experience promised by decades of science fiction like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Firefly,” the developers write on the games homepage. “The ability to explore space, to interact on the macro scale of planets and stars as well as the micro scale of rooms and characters, to own and customize a ship which becomes a kind of traveling home, to be given the freedom to explore and interact with the world at one’s own will- these features have yet to come together in a single game which fulfills the dreamed-of worlds that scifi fans imagine. Rodina aims to be a step in the direction of realizing those dreams.”
From what the released footage shows us and how the visionaries behind Rodina talk about their project, it becomes apparent that while they aren’t necessarily taking any ideas from Notch, the games do have certain similarities. Seeing how the final products by Mojang and Elliptic Games will turn out, will make their releases all the more interesting.
