Calling it the “rebellious stepchild of Wing Commander, X-wing and Freespace 2“, former Lead Developer at LucasArts, Garry Gaber has set off to create a new space combat title, Starlight Inception. together with his wife “and a team of talented artists, designers and programmers”. Gaber has launched his project on Kickstarter and merely $70,000 short of their goal, he has 58 hours to make his idea come to life.
“Starlight Inception is a realistic and relevant 1st person (both with cockpit and without) / 3rd person strategic and tactical space combat experience,” the game’s page reads. “It has a unique blend of action with an involving storyline. Features include ship based combat both in space and on planets and moons, interplanetary exploration, and multiplayer dogfighting.”
The game will include two main game modes, one of them will put players in the shoes of a soldier who is fighting in the fourth World War, in an intergalactic battle. Mission types include “straight shoot-’em ups, rescue missions, salvage missions”.
Giving players something more of a drop-in gameplay, the second mode “is a sort of strategic defense of your mothership, where you deploy turrets and engage in ship to ship combat to defend against incoming marauders.”
There will also be a multiplayer component included in the final version, with various gametypes such as CTF, Deathmatch etc.
With more and more classic genres seeing revivals lately and Kickstarter being the obvious portal to launch unique titles, it seems like Gaber’s attempt to bring back space combat is the obvious decision. However, Starlight Inception still needs your help, even though they’re struggling to make the final push, we know for a fact that the final 24 hours can be deciding.
