Sometimes we really do not understand why games developers are so odd. I swear that sometimes they sit in their evil lairs, twirling their stupidly long moustaches and hatching out ways to randomly annoy people. Gearbox are the latest team to aggravate a demographic, and it’s are pretty big one too – women.
According to Melissa K. (MOOSH89), Gearbox producer Brian Burleson has said that Aliens: Colonial Marines will not feature any female marines when playing multiplayer modes. This spurred her on to create a petition to push for women to appear in the game’s online components.
We are really not sure why women were left out. I mean surely they can use the same character models and assets used for the single player characters. Also the Alien series is famous for having a strong female lead (Ripley), an Alien Queen and the ship’s AI is even called “Mother”. Girl power!
Melissa commented on the odd situation saying:
“Women are a big part of the ALIENS universe. The main character, the Queen Alien, the supporting female cast members, and even the United States Colonial Marines has many female marines, roughly close to the same number as men enlisted.”
It seems that Gearbox may have already picked up on this though as they stated:
“Women soldiers don’t necessarily need to look or act much different, especially in a setting like Aliens where they all act like stereotypical marines anyway,”
The petition has only got 349 signatures at the moment but is steadily growing.
We hope that we have some virtual female teammates when playing online. Afterall nobody likes a sausage fest.

Maybe that’s the reason they were afraid it may take on a different role as a game.
A Marine is a marine, doesn’t matter whether it’s a woman!
