Final Fantasy XIV to begin charging

Final Fantasy XIV

Since 1987 Square Enix (formerly known as Square) have been developing and publishing Final Fantasy games – a fantasy/sci-fi RPG that explores turn-based strategy and tactics.

Even amongst some if the most dedicated fans Final Fantasy has recently fallen from grace as it now has fourteen games, an anime and various films. In September 2010, Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIV as a MMORPG and the reception was not positive. The launch was a disaster and the game received 49/100 on Metacritic and also was given the award ‘Most Disappointing Game of the Year’ at the Game of the Year Awards.

In October, over a year later, Square Enix announced that version 2.0 will be on its way with serious improvements for the online game in store for hopeful fans. The company also announced yesterday that next year the game will be moving out of the free-play period and will begin charging $9.99 or about £6.40 from January 6th 2012 for a 30 day subscription. Final Fantasy XIV.2 will be on its way in 2013, and a beta for the PS3 will be carried out hopefully in the autumn of 2012. Considering the disastrous launch of the game, and its general mediocrity; is it too much for Square Enix to ask for people to pay?
