With Double Fine’s campaign coming to an end, Wasteland 2 has kicked off its run on Kickstarter to raise $900,000… only they’ve already reached $1 million in two days.
Earlier revealed via Twitter, Brian Fargo, CEO of inExile Entertainment, announced that he’d be bringing back the mother of all post-apocalyptic video games, Wasteland. Fargo, alongside Alan Pavlish and Mike Stackpole who return as lead designers, plans to revive the RPG classic with a direct Sequel to the original game from 1988. The composer for Fallout 1 and 2, Mark Morgan, concept artist, Andree Wallin, and co-creator of Fallout, Jason Anderson, will be joining the development team as well, to bring back the title which supposedly went on to inspire the entire Fallout series.
The $1 million mark is relevant, due to the milestones the game has set for itself. Pledging for $900,000, Brian Fargo originally had planned to donate the remaining $100,000 so that the development team could “do this game right”. Further goals are general expansions of the in-game world, music and stories at $1.25 million and the addition of Mac as a platform at $1.5 million as well as more content, beyond that “the sky is the limit”.
Seeing how Double Fine successfully tallied up over $3 million more than they asked for, time will show how vast the world of Wasteland 2 will be. However, the “success” of other Kickstarter campaigns has me wondering, if this will be a route for developers to fund their ideas in the future.
