After reading the interview given by Executive Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Director Yoshikai Hirabayashi on Resident Evil, horror didn’t appear to be making a comeback this time around. From what we’ve seen at today’s Xbox conference at E3, we can pretty much bury any hopes that might have been left.
If you want the full coverage on what Microsoft had to show, you can check that out here, I simply want to put into perspective what our first look at gameplay for Resident Evil 6 had to offer to “make a horror experience”.
The demo started off with Leon being thrown into a massive hoard of infected and instead of fending for his life, he decided to end all others. This is possibly due to the fact that a developer controlled the playthrough, but Leon didn’t seem to give a rats ass, literally running past enemies and blowing them to pieces. He even went so far, as to duel wield guns.
And of course a true action hero can’t stick to using guns, so more often than not, Leon simply ran up to enemies, stabbing them to death or even disarming them to mutilate them with their own tools.
To build up suspense at one point, the guy who was playing the demo peaked around the corner and we saw a group of enemies charge up a stair well, this is where I expected to see him backtrack in order to stay alive, but no, he chucked a grenade into the horde, killing all of them.
An action game wouldn’t be complete without a Michael Bay scripted cinematic and Resident Evil 6 did not disappoint. After a plane had crashed in the middle of the road, Leon was forced to flee the scene before jumping into a chopper, which he must fly himself seconds later because the pilot is killed.
But wait, a vehicle section wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t crash? On an adrenaline rush as it is, the demo simply decided to keep going. While crashing into neon lights, through entire buildings and even against a train, Leon managed to survive a fall out of the helicopter, all while killing the pilot who turned into a zombie after dying.
After the crash landing, our bulletproof protagonist emerged in a giant complex filled with infected, much like a scene from Dead Rising, though I didn’t bat an eye. At this point I was waiting for the Super Saiyan transformation to take out the crowd, while dodging nuclear missiles to survive.
At this point I have simply given up all hope and have embraced the fact that Resident Evil is balls to the wall action, without a tiny remnant of the survival horror genre.
Let me just remind you that Executive Producer Kobayashi stated, “So Leon’s story is more traditional gothic horror.”
man!
horror died from RE4!
Why wouldn’t all these RE Horror fans get it through their thick head!?
king of horror is Dead Space!
With screens of coop and dual-wielding Isaac, I’m worried about Dead Space as well, hopefully E3 will prove me wrong
