A group of dedicated fans have come together to recreate the original Wolfenstein 3D by id Software from 1992, in an HD remake dubbed “Wolfram”.
After being disappointed by simple OpenGL ports of the FPS classic, a few Russian developers decided to take matters in their own hands. Using their own engine, Volatile3D II, they decided to experiment with how remixing retro titles would work and Wolfenstein seemed like the perfect place to start.
Though the creators explain, “Wolfram was not intended to reveal all the features of engine”. Instead their new title is supposed to illustrate how fast they can recreate simple 3D games, for instance the Nazi shooter only took 4 months to develop.
Wolfram can be downloaded for free. The game includes the first episode, with 9 levels and one secret level, as well as tons of weapons and enemies from the original title, and an achievement system.
While the official page is completely in Russian, you can head on over to Mod DB and give the action classic a go.
Being able to recreate a series of yesteryear video games in a quick manner is something we are interested in seeing more of in the future.
